Treating brain cancer with cannabis

Dr. Tom Hei poses for a head shot.

With the ever evolving debate in the United States regarding the federal classification of cannabis as a schedule I controlled substance it remains difficult, for both medical and scientific researchers, to study the affects on users and patients.

Dr. Vladimir N. Ivanov and Dr. Jinhua Wu from Dr. Tom K. Hei's laboratory in the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University Medical Center recently published their research on "Regulation of human glioblastoma cell death by combined treatment of cannabidiol, γ-radiation and small molecule inhibitors of cell signaling pathways" in Oncotarget and is open access for reading. With the recent diagnosis of Sen. John McCain with glioblastoma, both the cancer and research have seen increased headlines and time from news outlets.
